The plant is the delivery centre for final assembly lines in Toulouse and Hamburg for all the programs with the exception of the A380 – a role it shares with the Puerto Real plant in Cádiz. On a structural level, the organisation empowers Airbus plants responsible for delivering aircraft components to the individual Airbus final assembly lines, and provides the necessary resources and leverage. “We’re trying to tune where we put heat into different parts of a structure,” he explains. “The A350 is the first program to pulse the wing assembly line,” states Middleton. It can pick up a piece of material and carefully manipulate it into a 3D shape and then place it on a specially shaped tool and repeat the process. Getafe, located in central Spain, specialises in aeronautical component engineering, design, production and assembly. According to the NCC, this process combines the structural benefit of a long-fibre reinforced composite sheet with the speed and geometric complexity of injection moulding.
